I'm listening to Herbie's solo in "Mr. Clean" right now (6:40-9:37), and his Fender Rhodes tone is a classic example of the slamming wood-hammer Sparkletop sound. Not only that, but he really gets his groove on at the end! I have to say that Red Clay is still my favorite of Freddie & Herbie's 2 albums from 1970, but Straight Life is a very close 2nd. I consider them to be an essential 2-disc set. |
