It's nice to see how young European musicians, most of them not even having been born back then, rediscover Rhodes-heavy musical styles like 60's hardbop/souljazz (as Netherland's Monsieur Dubois do, whom I introduced here earlier) or early-to-mid 70's funk/fusion, as presented here by the Danish project Schantz Segment. Led by Morten Schantz on beautiful sounding Rhodes plus D6 and a pile of ancient Korg synthies, these guys got it all: in their best moments highly reminiscent of Headhunter-era Herbie, just only sometimes slippin' into the mindless highgloss virtuosity display of Al Di Meola's solo records, they blow with the sheer joy and enthusiasm of people who just looooove what they're doing and the big sound they're creating, regardless of possible market potential or return-on-investment calculations. This alone (plus the cool hippie-psychedelia-meets-blaxploitation cover artwork) makes this one a record to be owned. |
