Comments:  Another mainstream jazz pianist who recorded some Rhodes tracks in the the 70's. On this album (rereleased on CD in the 80's) Hank Jones plays half of the cuts on Rhodes and the rest on acoustic. As always, he is musically tasteful and with beautiful touch. There are standards and blues here, all spoken in bebop language. His Rhodes work sounds terrific--perhaps he had Rhodes experience from his long-standing day job in the house band of an NYC TV network. This date is clearly on a well-adjusted Suitcase model, with ping-pong panning, and superb studio EQ that lets the dynamics and tone shine through. No bark and blat on this date--he plays it gently, as he does the acoustic. Check out his LH comping on Rhodes.....on acoustic Jones frames his voicings in 10ths, often pretty full, but on Rhodes he's much more delicate, maybe to keep the bottom end clean and undistorted. This is beautiful elegant stuff, not a go-for-broke blowing session. Those who like the chimey bell-like Rhodes sound should love this session.
