If you know Brian Auger merely as a world class Hammond wrestler,
you're in serious danger of missing the best part. His crafty, spirited, highly powered and tasteful Rhodes work on his early 70's Oblivion Express albums "Closer to it" and "Straight Ahead" is downright beautiful and makes one give him a mild verdict for his weak-voiced singing attempts. I don't know if these albums are available as re-issues again, but it should be possible to get your hands on the 1994 "Best Of" double-CD on Chronicles/Polygram that features his finest work from that period as well as from earlier and later ones (and is, of course, a must for Hammond buffs, too!) |
