Comments:  Totally underrated! Since these songs precede Herbie's foray into pop culture with his "Headhunters," many people have no idea about the Mwandishi days. Too bad, too, because the caliber of Rhodes playing on these tracks is outstanding.

"Wiggle, Waggle" has a blusey Rhodes solo, "Bedtime Story" slows things down (notice the Rhodes's tempermental tuning), and "Fat Albert," the theme for the real deal. Onward it gets etherial - "Suite for Angela" offers Rhodes with effects.

If you love Rhodes music from Herbie, these are definitely tracks to check out.

Comments:  Fat Albert Rotunda is where it all started for the Rhodes in jazz. Tell Me A Bedtime Story, the song that set the standard.

Comments:  3 albums on 2 discs: Fat Albert Rotunda, Mwandishi and Crossings. These represent Herbie's transition between his work with Miles and the beginning of the Headhunters band, with the Fat Albert material being the most accessible (and also my favorite). As it goes on, it gets farther and farther out there, which has taken me many years of listening to fully appreciate. Word has it that Warner Bros. just re-released all 3 albums individually, so I'd say go get Fat Albert for starters. It is a must for Herbie fans!
